Most people never think twice about their router’s channel width setting. It sits quietly in an advanced menu, surrounded by jargon, and gets ignored during setup. But channel width is one of the most impactful settings you can adjust on a modern router — and understanding it takes less time than you might expect.
Think of a Wi-Fi channel like a lane on a highway. A 20MHz channel is a single narrow lane: stable, reliable, and less prone to congestion from neighboring networks. An 80MHz channel, on the other hand, is four lanes wide. More data can travel at once, which means faster throughput — provided the road isn’t already packed with traffic from other drivers.
Channel width options typically available on modern routers include 20MHz, 40MHz, 80MHz, and sometimes 160MHz, depending on the Wi-Fi standard your hardware supports. The 80MHz width is standard for Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and is also supported by Wi-Fi 6.
Why I decided to make the change
My home setup is fairly typical: a mid-range router running in a two-bedroom apartment, a handful of laptops, phones, a smart TV, and a few smart home devices. I had always left the 5GHz band set to 20MHz — partly out of habit, partly because I had read somewhere that narrower channels were more stable in dense urban environments.

The actual results after switching to 80MHz

The results were noticeable almost immediately:

When 80MHz might not be the right choice
It would be misleading to suggest that switching to 80MHz is always the right move. Context matters significantly here, and there are real scenarios where a narrower channel is the smarter option.
If you live in a densely populated area — an apartment building with dozens of active Wi-Fi networks — the 5GHz spectrum can become congested. Wider channels overlap more with neighboring networks, which increases co-channel interference and can actually degrade performance rather than improve it. In those conditions, 20MHz or 40MHz may deliver more consistent results.
Additionally, older devices that only support Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) may not handle 80MHz channels properly. While they will typically still connect, they may negotiate a lower data rate or experience instability. If you have a mix of old and new hardware, it’s worth checking compatibility before committing to the change.
How to find the right setting for your environment
The best approach is empirical: try different settings and measure the results. Here’s a practical process you can follow:
- Log into your router’s admin interface (usually accessible at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
- Navigate to the wireless or Wi-Fi settings for the 5GHz band.
- Note your current channel width setting before changing anything.
- Switch to 80MHz, save, and allow devices to reconnect.
- Run a speed test using a tool like Speedtest.net or Fast.com, and also test local transfer speeds if possible.
- Monitor stability over 24 to 48 hours — not just peak speeds.
- If you notice increased disconnections or interference, revert to 40MHz and repeat the evaluation.
Using a Wi-Fi analyzer app on your smartphone can also help you visualize which channels neighboring networks are using, giving you a clearer picture of how congested your local spectrum is before you commit to a wider channel.
The broader lesson about router settings
This experience reminded me that routers ship with conservative defaults for good reason — those defaults need to work reasonably well in the widest possible range of environments. But “reasonable” isn’t the same as “optimal,” and a few minutes spent exploring your router’s advanced settings can yield real, tangible improvements.
Beyond channel width, settings like transmit power, band steering, and Quality of Service (QoS) rules are all worth examining. Most people never touch them. That’s understandable — router interfaces are rarely user-friendly — but the performance gains available through thoughtful configuration are genuine and often significant.
If your Wi-Fi feels slower than it should, don’t immediately assume you need new hardware. Start with the settings you already have access to. Channel width is an excellent place to begin.
